That’s right, registration for camp ends August 10!

Camp will begin August 12 and run through August 18.

If you want the pivotal Nintendo summer camp experience, this is the closest thing to it!

What even is Camp Hyrule? Camp Hyrule was a virtual summer camp that Nintendo used to host back in the late 90s and early 00’s. Now some eager Nintendo fans have come together to revive the spirit of camp and keep the tradition going.

How do I sign up for this thing? It’s very easy! All you need is a tumblr account. Chances are very good that if you’re reading this you have a tumblr account. So if you have a tumblr account, follow this tumblr blog on tumblr with your tumblr account. Once you’ve followed the blog, thats it. You’re registered. You’re signed up. The contract is sealed. That was all the effort required of you.

Hold up cowboy, Im not signing up without knowing what Im getting into, what can I expect from Camp Hyrule? Camp Hyrule will feature a variety of activities through the week. Such as creative art and writing contests, trivia contests, and teamwork contests that’ll require some coordinating between you and other campers.

The goal of these contests is to compete in the yearly cabin competition. Campers are sorted into different cabins (blogs in this scenario) and for every contest you compete in, you get points for your cabin. We’re kind of a small organization here so we can’t promise any big spectacle prizes for the winning cabin, but it’s the spirit of competition that counts!

Ok but what if I dont want to exert my right brain? If that’s your line of thinking, Camp Hyrule includes several chatrooms for you to get to know your fellow campers or perhaps participate in some trivia contests or swap Friend Codes. Hey maybe someone has those persimmons you’ve always wanted!

Incidentally, this year Camp Hyrule will be hosted through Synchtube, so we’ll make sure to take advantage of that and have a couple of movie nights.

Well I’m convinced. How much does this cost again? Did you miss it before? It’s free! You need zero money! If you have a tumblr account and follow the camp blog, thats all you need to do!

We can’t wait to see you there and we look forward to opening camp August 12th!

Camp Hyrule Maps 97-02

I was originally gonna do these isolated but I figured a photoset would be better.

Anyway This is what Camp Hyrule maps looked like from 1997-2002. You can see early on they had a realistic lookin camp going before switching to a cartoonier art style in 99.

2000 is when they started having fun with it and doing little storylines. That year they had the Moon crashing down cause Majora’s Mask was about to come out. I remember there was secondary plot that year where Waluigi stole the Camp Tennis Tournament Trophy or something like that. And then he used the apocalypse as a distraction for his neferious schemes.

2001 was all about the Gamecube’s blueprints being stolen! That’s right, apparently Nintendo entrusted top-secret plans of their upcoming console to a summer camp. You had to play little mini-games based on Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin to “win” them back. As it turns out the fiend who stole the blueprints and ripped them up was Wario! At the end of last day he let Bowser loose and the entire Camp was on fire.

2002 was backwards and actually STARTED with a mess! And being all Super Mario Sunshine-based, day-by-day campers gradually restored it back into it’s former glory. I mean yeah ok we spent the whole camp cleaning but dangit if it wasn’t fun! The culprit was Shadow Mario which actually turned out to be one of the counselors. He got to see first hand what happens to people who defile Camp Hyrule by being sentenced to camp jail. Nasty places those virtual prisons.

Side note: I really like how 99 and 00 have similarities. That kind of continuity is rarely seen in Camp Hyrule! Then again when camp is destroyed practically every year I guess it has not choice BUT to move right?

If Camp Hyrule sounds like your cup of tea/coffee/beverage of choice, you may want to consider signing up for this year’s camp!

Camp Hyrule Memories!

camphyrule2k13:

Howdy campers!

In the interest of waxing nostalgic, we’d like to see if anyone would be willing to share their classic camp memories. It could be from last year’s tumblr camp or from the legitimate Nintendo-run camp of ye olden days, if you’ve got a CH memory worth sharing, just hit up the submit box!

Hey! I’m accepting old CH memories over at the camp blog. Doesn’t matter whether or not you’re signed up for this year, feel free to send in whatever retro CH memories you might have!

Ah those wistful summer days of my youth going to a camp without having to leave my moms basement….

The CH ‘13 blog is ready to roll!

This year camp will be August 5-11

To sign up you just need to follow the camp blog

Camp Hyrule 2013?

Last August I hosted a revival of Camp Hyrule through tumblr. It was a blend of various blogs, activities, and a very fickle chatroom.

There were many things that could’ve been improved (again, chatroom) but by some accounts it was called a success!

I’d like to give it another shot this year but I want to know what the interest level is. I mean whats the use of planning a community event without a community?

If you don’t know what a Camp Hyrule even is, it used to be this virtual summer camp Nintendo hosted annually every August for one week from 1995-2006 where you chatted it up with fellow Nintendo fans. There was a flashy map with hotspots based on Nintendo stuff like the Kirby Mess Hall and the Mario Kart track. Basically they were all chatrooms but it was very atmospheric. Every year you were assigned a cabin (another chatroom) and you would compete with everyone else in stuff like art and writing contests to win points for your cabin. The winning cabin would sometimes get a poster mailed to them but later years had them winning screensavers and stuff like that.

And of course, I don’t need money to get this project going and you wouldn’t need money to join. It’s free on both ends, how’s that for convenient?

I just need to know how many people are interested in either trying again or trying for the first time. So do whatever fancy tumblr things you want to this post (like, reblog, reply) so I can figure out whether or not I should be planning another one this year.

Thats right, there’s only six one day left to sign-up for Camp Hyrule!

Never heard of Camp Hyrule? It used to be a virtual camp that Nintendo ran for a week every summer up until about 5 years ago. This year I’m organizing a tumblrized version.

What can you expect from Camp Hyrule?

  • Everyone is assigned to a cabin (a blog) that will be your go-to hub over the week.
  • Chatrooms to get to know your fellow campers and make new friends!
  • Cabins compete with each other to be the top dog. The reward? Bragging Rights
  • Daily activities for you to get creative and earn points for your cabin!
  • An ask blog featuring a unique variety of Nintendo characters!
  • Camp Awards! At the end of camp, (virtual) awards will be handed out to campers for specific categories.

Camp Hyrule will be held from August 6th to August 12th and all you need to do to sign up is follow the main blog by Midnight 6PM CDT on August 5th.

Hey guys! There’s only one day left to sign up for CH! Last time I said the deadline was Midnight but Im afraid I had to move that up a few hours to get more time to prepare cabin arrangements. So if you’re at all interested make sure you’ve followed the camp blog by 6pm Central time tomorrow night. That’s less than 24 hours from now!

Also if you’re already signed up make sure your ask boxes are open so you can get your cabin info! If you forget to open them up, well thats fine! Just contact me or a counselor when camp starts on Monday and we’ll get you sorted out.

While a couple of people have volunteered to be a counselor so far, more help would certainly be welcome!

Counselor

The responsibilities of a counselor boil down to moderating your cabin blog and your cabin chats. You’d basically be periodically checking up on your cabin during the day and ideally there will be at least 2 counselors to a cabin so that you could work in shifts if need be or just help each other out in general.

Amphitheater

Counselors aren’t all that’s needed though. Camp Hyrule vets may remember the Amphitheater that hosted Q&A sessions with Nintendo employees. This year, the plan is to make the Amphitheater an askblog featuring various Nintendo characters. If you feel like you’re able to fill the shoes of a Nintendo persona, that’d be a big help!

The plan is for it to be an askblog that responds with pictures. You don’t have to be a wiz at art, just as long as it’s recognizable and it’s something you’d enjoy doing. If this idea doesn’t pan out that way, it could be reconsidered to just settle for less art-intensive posts.

Contact

And those are the major things that need volunteers right now. You don’t have to be a counselor if you just want to help run the askblog or vice versa, and if you want to help out with both that’d be fantastic! Either way, send a note if you’re interested.

Status

Main goal is to have 10 counselors. There’s still 5 openings available.

Secondary goal is to have 5 people help run the Amphitheater. There’s still 4 openings are available.

Hey friends, I could still use a few more helping hands for Camp Hyrule!

Camp Hyrule Map 07
This is what the grand finale of Camp Hyrule looked like. This puny little map.
The highlight being you could enter to win a lifesize Link statue.
So what else could you do? Well, you could play some of the classic Flash games and you could post some of your own CH memories. But that was it. No cabins, no activities, no disaster. Although there was a somewhat hokey plot. There was a staff notice saying that since this was the thirteenth year of Camp, combined with it’s bad reputation of horrible disasters every year, it’d just amplify the bad luck. I guess you can’t really blame them right?
You could say the real disaster this year was that it ended up being the final year of camp!
There have been fan attempts to revive it using their own message boards, but I thought I’d take a shot at it using tumblr. So far theres a nice handful of eager people ready to give it a try. If you want to experience another fan’s attempt at recreating the Camp Hyrule experience, then come on and sign up!
